Gone Sketchin' – Color Update

Here's the final color for my Gone Sketchin' piece.  This one was just for me, so I used a more looser approach and just tried to have fun with it.  I've also included a few closeups to show some of the brush work.

Book Worm

I'll always prefer curling up with an actual book to reading novels on digital devices. It's just not the same without that old musty paper smell.

It's A Hard Corps Life

A bit of fan art for my favorite client, the San Diego Derby Dolls. Fingers crossed they'll use it in a poster for an upcoming bout for the Hard Corps. Either way, I'm looking forward to coloring this one.

Future Sketch

Okay, so maybe I've seen the movie Solarbabies one too many times. But can you blame me? Planet Earth has essentially been turned into one huge skatepark. If you ask me, that's a future worth sketching about!

I've been feeling the need to get back to my comic book nerd roots.  So here's a loosely rendered sketch of Princess from the show Gatchaman.  If I draw any more random characters I'll let you guys know.

Another Round

Here's another look at Live Bait. I've decided to simply go with what I know, and the thing I know best is comic book nerds…because I am one.

Just Ducky

As a way to brush up on my digital inking skills I gave myself a quick stand alone project…a comic strip.  This would allow me to focus on inking without feeling the need to go to color. Plus, I could work on character turnarounds and do some basic panel to panel storytelling as well. The only problem…I'm having way too much fun to stop now.

So here's my first attempt at what I hope will be many more comic strips to come. I've posted both the individual panels and the strip as a whole to test how best to view the comic on various digital devices.

It's Always Something

Once and a while I'll forget to include certain details in a sketch and have to make adjustments later. Luckily, in this case it was an easy fix. See if you can spot the difference between sketch and final color.

Ride Sally Ride

A bit of Dr. Seuss inspired whimsy. Not sure if I'll have time to clean it up and go to color anytime soon. But I'll post it here if and when I do.

King Me

For this piece I mixed things up by playing around with some new Photoshop brushes instead of using my usual favorites.  I think I found a few keepers in the bunch.

…and a close up.

Quick Turnaround

Drawing turnarounds is a great exercise to strengthen consistency. Plus, once they're done, they can be used for future reference…and reference is always a good thing.

Work In Progress

Here are some character designs for a new project I've started. If all goes well I'll post more images.

I'm currently working on some new promo pieces for the San Diego Derby Dolls. This illustration was created for a recruitment flyer I'll be designing soon.

Stay Loose

There're are a lot of happy little accidents that occur while working loosely that can add extra flourish to a finished piece. So I'm always fighting against my own urge to tighten up when taking a rough idea to final illustration. Sometimes an earlier color study can wind up being the stronger piece of work.

Voice in the Wilderness

Most of the time I have a pretty clear picture in my head what I'm about to draw. But occasionally a drawing will come out of nowhere and surprise me. I'm not entirely sure where this little guy came from, but he's made himself heard.

El Gazapo!

How much do I love that gazapo means both young rabbit and blunder in Spanish?  I think it's the perfect name for my fuzzy long-eared luchador friend here.

…and the sketch.

Gorilla Time

Random gorilla sketch…guess I need to draw a few ducks now too.

Prehistoric - Part 2

I'm happier overall with the drawing on this one. But I've lost the zany quality of the previous sketch by reworking the proportions. I have a sneaky feeling this guy will be showing up in my sketchbook a lot more.

I always wanted a pet dinosaur. Who doesn't? So I imagined this one acting like a puppy, jumping at the sight of his own tail, etc.  Of course, now I want to draw him chasing his tail or playing fetch with a big bone.

Jazz Hands!

When I'm having fun drawing I think it shows through in my sketches.  At least, that's always the hope…and this one made me smile.

Call Me Rusty

I've been away from the drawing board for far too long.  So my new year's resolution is to practice, practice, practice…to get back to the point where I'm sketching nearly everyday. To that end here are my first sketches of 2014.
